WATER AND SANITATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (WASIP), TOWN-1 PESHAWAR (Cleaning of Primary and Secondary Drains

The objectives of this project are to clean the primary and secondary drains in Town-1, Peshawar. This will improve the health and living conditions and address priority needs identified by the citizen of Town-1, Peshawar. This will also ensure the cleanliness and the healthy environments of the areas.

As an initial step, the cleaning and de-silting of primary drains of length 60,569 meters and secondary drains of length 88,094 meters in 25 UCs. Of Town-1, will be done. During cleaning of drains, the assessment of nature of rehabilitation works, will be made for which BOQs and cost estimates will be prepared for tender documents and award of contracts for rehabilitation / improvement works of drains.

With the improved sanitation system in 25 UCs of Town-1, under this project, the TMA will get more revenue and their recovery efficiency will be improved.  Savings resulting at city/town administration level from enhanced efficiencies and more transparent and accountable management systems

  • Improvements in water supply and sanitation services will contribute to reducing the burden of disease, thereby impacting on the healthcare expenditures of both Govt. of KP and the citizens
  • Improved municipal services in target areas will also help to create a more enabling environment for economic and business activities which will lead to greater economic growth, lower un-employment rates and increased per-capita income of the citizens.
  • Promoting citizen involvement and awareness will lead to increased revenue generation on account of efficient collection of user charges such as water charges from municipal services.

Social benefits 

  • Lower incidence of water-borne diseases will increase productivity by reducing days of illness.
  • Time savings related to water collection or accessing sanitary facilities. These time savings translate into either increased production, improved education levels or more leisure time.
  • With the improved urban life, the access to education, health (through health and hygiene promotion) and employment, the social indicators of the target cities will improve.
  • MSDP will help to achieve the “Right to Water”, proclaimed by the United Nations, which is said to be "indispensable for leading a life with human dignity" and "a prerequisite for the realization of other human rights."
